Local Impact

Several estimates pin the economic loss during the shutdown at 15-50 billion dinars (USD 110 – 388 million). Algerian consumer have called on the government to find other ways to secure school exams, with some saying mobile phone scramblers installed at examination centers could suffice.

Data and Analysis

Access to the Internet was disrupted and social media and messaging platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp were reportedly blocked in the country as students sat their national exams.  While there are no official statements from authorities, regional news reported that the education ministry ordered mobile operators Djezzy, Mobilis, and Ooredoo to cut Internet access as a measure to prevent cheating during the baccalaureate exams.
