We’ve updated the methodology we use to compile the Internet Society Pulse Internet Resilience Index (IRI). The IRI uses a range of data sources, and we update it on a regular basis. In this release, we’ve updated it to include 2024 data, but we’ve also updated both how we calculate and how we represent that data. The overall result is that the Index now provides data for 180 countries for the entire period from Q1 2019 to Q4 2024.

Introducing a new version of the Pulse IXP Tracker! The first version of the Tracker was released in July 2024. Since then, we’ve been gathering feedback from users and the broader Internet Society community. In September, we updated how we count IXPs, which reduced the total number reflected in the tracker, but made it more accurate. In this release, we’ve made a big upgrade, with more data, an updated look and feel, improved structure, and more ways for Internet advocates to make the case for IXP development.

We fixed a bug in how we calculate historical data for IXPs. This led to some inaccuracy in how that data was represented in the IXP tracker, especially visible in the graphs. We've fixed it now and updated how we generate the data each month.

For each indicator we track, we always aim to use the most reliable, accessible dataset, with data from as many countries as possible, and to keep those consistent across Pulse. We’ve updated the source we use for country-level domain use in the Pulse Country Reports.

We’ve updated the way we count active IXPs. The Pulse IXP Tracker is designed to show the role of Internet exchange points in a resilient Internet ecosystem, and to build up a picture of the growth and health of the IXP landscape over time. We’ve been rethinking how to we do that in Pulse, starting with improving how we define an active IXP, and, as a result, updating the global total of IXP

We’ve made some updates to the way we determine the values in the NetLoss Calculator, the tool that helps model the economic impact of Internet shutdowns. These will have changed some of the values you see when you use the calculator, but we believe the updated methodology makes the model stronger.

The Internet Resilience Index (IRI) is an important measure of overall Internet health and development. As part of our iterative approach to Pulse improvements, we’ve taken the chance to make it a little easier to navigate and (we hope) more straightforward to understand what the IRI is and why it matters. Most of the changes relate to content and layout.

We work continually to improve our Internet measurement methodologies. We’ve recently updated how we calculate two of the measurements that we use on the country profile pages that live under Country Reports, both of which will have an impact on how they’re represented in Pulse.

The section of Pulse that covers Internet Shutdowns is our most popular by far. We’ve heard from the community that they want it to be easier to show and understand the scale and impact of shutdowns around the world. We’ve taken the first big step in redesigning this section, so that it’s easier to find ongoing shutdowns, explore those that have already happened, and see where the worst offenders are.

If you’re using the Pulse API you can now retrieve the data for many of the endpoints in a spreadsheet-friendly CSV (comma-separated values) format, in addition to the existing JSON format.
