Country Report
Ethiopia
The Internet in Ethiopia faces several challenges, most notably the government-enforced shutdowns regularly imposed on it. While the impact of these shutdowns may not seem to be as widely felt as in countries where Internet usage is more prevalent — only 17% of Ethiopians use the Internet — the economic and reputational cost is growing. For example, the recent servicing blocking shutdown (9 February to 16 July 2023) cost the country nearly USD $43 million and led to an estimated 700 job losses.
