Local authorities ordered Internet Service Providers to suspend mobile data services in several areas of the Srinagar district from 3 to 5 January as part of wider actions to quell civil unrest in the region. These orders follow similar orders in our district areas over the past month. Internet shutdowns during protests or civil unrest impact citizens' ability to get accurate information from government sources when they need it most. It also becomes harder for citizens to contact family members and friends in other parts of the country or other countries.

On 4 January 2022, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir issued Government Order No. Home-02(TSTS) of 2022, confirming the suspension of mobile data services in several areas of the Srinagar district — including Anchar, Eidhah, Qamarwari, Soura, MR Gunj, Nowhattta, Safakadal, Bagyas, Rainawari, Ahmad Nagar and Nowgam — from 3 January 2022 (15:00) to 5 January 2022 (21:00), citing concerns about targeted attacks by terrorist elements using mobile apps and VoIP services.
