Release notes: 2025-01-23

We've been working on making the data for the IXP Tracker more usable, including releasing it as an open source library. We've also made some other changes and updates that more accurately reflect the growth and membership of IXPs.

What's New

The IXP Tracker data is now an open source library

This has involved rewriting the code again from scratch and reprocessing all the data using the new code. You'll find the library here.

Improvements

See IXP membership history

Previously, we only indicated whether an ASN was a member of an IXP. But an individual ANS's membership might not be continuous: they leave, join, and rejoin on a fairly regular basis. We now track that history, and you'll be able to see it in the Tracker.

More accurate member count

We used to treat prefixes as equivalent to members, but since some ASes use more than one prefix, this may have made some IXP members counts less accurate. When a network uses more that one prefix, we now aggregate those into one member.

Summed-up port speeds of prefixes

Before we updated the way we count members, we only summed the port speed for one prefix per member. Now we've summed up all the port speeds for ASNs peering at IXPs, which you'll now see reflected on individual pages. You might also notice that, as a result of this, the Total Global Capacity measurement has increased significantly.

Improved detection of active and inactive IXPs

By using active member count data, we've made it easier to determine whether an IXP is currently active or inactive.
