  El apagón en Tigray, donde viven unos 6 millones de personas, ha obstaculizado la entrega de ayuda, ha cortado el contacto de la gente con sus seres queridos, ha devastado la economía local y ha impedido que los reporteros lleven la difícil situación de la región al escenario mundial. Un nuevo informe de Top10VPN, una firma de revisión de VPN con sede en Londres que evalúa la privacidad, la seguridad y la libertad en Internet, estimó que las empresas locales han perdido 145,8 millones de dólares sólo en 2021 debido al apagón en Tigray. Mientras tanto, la Organización Mundial de la Salud fue citada diciendo que tuvo que recurrir a comunicarse a través de informes en papel que tenían que ser entregados en mano. Las restricciones de acceso a Internet también exacerbaron la propagación de la desinformación durante el conflicto, ya que la gente tenía dificultades para acceder a las noticias sobre lo que ocurría sobre el terreno, lo que alimentó las especulaciones y las falsedades.
