On 5 January 2019, authorities ordered local telecommunication providers to suspend Internet services in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district for 'precautionary measures' following an encounter between the government forces and militants at Aripal Tral area of Pulwama district. This was the second shutdown in the region in the past three days. Internet shutdowns during protests or civil unrest impact the ability of citizens to get accurate information from government sources when they need it most. It also becomes harder for citizens to contact family members and friends in other parts of the country, or in other countries.
