Access to various social media sites was intermittently restricted as the government attempts to contain protests led by the opposition, the National Assembly of Venezuela. The outages, which have been reported several times this month, are brief, and appear to coincide with politically significant events, such as speeches by opposition leader Juan Guaidó. Social media platforms were being used by the opposition to rally support in the absence of independent mass media. OONI’s testing of Twitter corroborates the anomalies experienced by local users. Meanwhile, IPYS Venezuela and Venezuela Inteligente  both received reports of connectivity issues in parts of Trujillo and Bolivar on January 26, which were observed only on CANTV, the country’s largest and state-owned Internet service provider.
