The Internet was reported to have been cut in parts of southern Ethiopia, including the main city of Hawassa, as activists protested the delay of a referendum to establish a separate regional state for the Sidama ethnic group. The Sidama are Ethiopia's fifth biggest ethnic group, making up 4% of the population, and mainly reside in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Region (SNNPR). Ethiopia has an ethnically based federal system, with its four biggest communities having their own regions.
