On June 16, 2020, a counterinsurgency operation in Turkawangam village, Shopian district (south Kashmir), resulted in the killing of three Hizb ul Mujahideen militants during a joint operation by Indian security forces. Following the encounter, 2G mobile internet services were suspended in Shopian district as a precautionary measure to prevent potential protests and unrest. This incident was part of a broader crackdown, with 19 militants killed in Shopian and Kulgam districts over the previous 10 days.
