On June 11, 2019, mobile internet services were suspended in Sopore, Baramulla district, following a violent gunfight between Indian security forces and militants in Wadoora Payeen village. The shutdown was triggered in the early hours of the morning as a joint team of the Army’s 22 RR, SOG, and CRPF initiated a cordon and search operation (CASO) based on intelligence reports regarding the presence of Lashkar-e-Taiba militants.
The digital blackout was implemented as a tactical measure to prevent civilian mobilization and to curb the spread of real-time operational information on social media. This incident reflects the ongoing pattern of localized internet disruptions in North Kashmir, used by authorities to maintain control and prevent public interference during active military engagements in residential areas.
