Internet monitoring groups have reported that access to several social media platforms, including Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, was blocked by state-run Internet service provider CANTV, also the largest telecom operator in the country. Local organization VE sin Filtro reports that TCP-based and SNI-filtering techniques were used to implement these restrictions. The block coincided with a failed military uprising. Access to the blocked services was restored on the same day, right before a livestreamed speech by President Nicolás Maduro.
The interruption is the latest in a series of intermittent Internet access blocks imposed by the government since January this year as it tries to contain protests led by the opposition, the National Assembly of Venezuela.
