We recently became aware of two IXPs listed in Papua New Guinea that were defunct. In fact, their network resources had been reclaimed by APNIC and were due to be released back into the pool to be re-used by a new network. It was obvious that these IXPs were inactive and were not going to be resurrected.
What's New
We’ve added some extra processing logic when we import data from PeeringDB to account for this situation. Now, when we import an IXP, we check the org that owns it in the data and whether that org also owns any networks. If that org has networks and none of them are marked “assigned” and all of them are registered to country “ZZ” in the NROstats data then we mark the IXP as inactive. There is also an inverse rule where if the org has networks and any of them are “assigned” or not registered to country “ZZ” in NRO then we mark an IXP as re-activated. This has resulted in 6 IXPs being removed from our IXP Tracker as of 1st August 2026:
